I've found a very worthy VW project...but it needs an engine.

What are your thoughts on the various vendors that sell turnkey / crate motors ?   I'm looking at a 1600 / 1641 stock, single-carb.  Nothing fancy, basically a direct replacement for the stock engine.    I see ads for companies like GEX, Scat, etc. in Hot VW's and online but don't know the reputations of the various vendors.

Once again, not looking for a hot rod engine, reliability and value for the $$ are my main considerations

Thanks in advance for your comments    (Car is a 1971 Super Beetle)

There is great value in buying one of these turn key engines but I'd check reviews before buying. Not naming names but some of the places you mentioned have a bad reputation when it comes to warranty issues. Do you a local air cooled VW shop that you could deal with in case of any issues?

There is no local shop, nearest is about 50 miles away and it's just one guy...he will install engines rebuilt by other people or install turn-key/crate engines but he doesn't rebuild any himself.     If anyone has feedback on specific vendors and they don't want to post here, send me a private message.   I just don't want to waste $$$$

Or any recommendations on quality rebuild services within a reasonable driving distance of Louisville, Kentucky  ??

Since there are a lot of vendors with turn-key crate engines I'd read some reviews and go for the one with the best warranty.

I would like to recomend Roy at Mofoco in Milwaukee. I bought two complete 1600DP from him with no issues at all. He knows what he is doing.
